The Giraffes are known for rowdy live performances and their gnarly back story. In 2002, Paris was shot in the leg by a fire marshal at White Castle in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Paris himself was ironically charged with assault for this incident.
Lead singer Lazar suffered two heart attacks in early 2005 for which he is in six figures of debt and is now outfitted with an implanted defibrillator.
Drummer Andrew Totolos is the host of the DIY channel’s small car customization show “Tricked Out”.
For some time, the band was managed by rock impresario Calvin Cherry, whose relationship with the band ended after his extradition to Greece on fraud charges.
The Giraffes have toured alongside Eagles of Death Metal as well as The Vacation, Skeleton Key, Local H, The Means and others.

Juno Reactor are a musical and performing act known for the cinematic fusion of electronic, orchestral and global music. Central to the project is Ben Watkins, and his collaborations with a constantly changing ensemble of musicians from across the world, including percussionist Mabi Thobejane from South Africa along with countrymen Amampondo, Eduardo Niebla, Steve Stevens, Greg Ellis, Taz Alexander, Ghetto Priest, Sugizo and recently Yasmin Levy. They are also famous for collaborating with composer Don Davis for the musical score of the film ‘The Matrix’ as well as other films.

Originally Juno Reactor was formed as an art project in 1990; Ben Watkins wanted to collaborate with other artists to produce and be involved in exciting projects that were not commercially driven. He wanted to create experimental music/non musical soundtracks that would work with installations, art pieces and film projects.

History

In 1993, Juno Reactor released their first single, “Laughing Gas”, on the NovaMute label. This was soon followed by their debut album, Transmissions. This release is considered to be one of the first albums in the goa trance genre. Later, the band released Luciana on Alex Paterson’s (The Orb) Inter-Modo label. Juno Reactor left NovaMute and Inter-Modo in 1995 and signed to UK’s Blue Room Released label to release the “Guardian Angel” single. Their album Beyond the Infinite was released in 1996.

The 1997 release on Wax Trax! Records/TVT Records, Bible of Dreams, was Juno Reactor’s fourth album. It had a sound much different from the previous albums and moved away from the traditional dance beats by implementing tribal influences. Watkins collaborated with Amampondo, a traditional South African percussion act, on the single Conga Fury. Ben Watkins and Amampondo went on a five week tour of the U.S., doing the opening for Moby. In 1998 Juno Reactor played a stunning live set with Amampondo at Glastonbury Festival.

Watkins released the fifth Juno Reactor album, Shango in 2000. It was the first of his albums on Metropolis Records. The first track from the album, Pistolero, was done in a collaboration with guitarist Steve Stevens (Billy Idol). The song opened up an entirely new direction for Juno Reactor. This same track was also featured during the trailer for the movie Once Upon a Time in Mexico, as well as the film itself. In the fall of 2002, Juno Reactor released a new single titled Hotaka. It was recorded in a Japanese studio overlooking Mt. Fuji. Hotaka once again featured Steve Stevens on guitar, and included traditional Taiko drummers, GOCOO. In 2003, the Odyssey 1992–2002 album was released as a compilation of the best Juno Reactor tracks of the past decade.

The sixth Juno Reactor album, Labyrinth, was released in October 2004, and featured Watkins’ work from the Matrix films. The new album once again cemented the tribal influences present in their music through tracks like Conquistador II.

In 2006 Ben Watkins was hired to compose an orchestral score for Brave Story (a Japanese feature anime). Sony Japan released the soundtrack in July. Recorded in Slovakia with the Bratislava Radio Symphony Orchestra and choir, it shows a new versatile and unexpected side of Ben Watkins and Juno Reactor.

In 2008, Ben Watkins collaborated with anime director Koji Morimoto for Genius Party Beyond, an anthology of short animated films from Studio 4°C.

Juno Reactor’s new album, Gods & Monsters, was released in March 2008, and features the introduction of Ghetto Priest and Sugizo into the Juno Reactor fold along with Eduardo Niebla, Xavier Morel, and Yasmin Levy. In an interview with Side-Line Magazine Watkins talks about the recording process of the album.

Appearances in media

Their remix of Traci Lords’ song Control as an instrumental was featured on the soundtrack for the Mortal Kombat movie. It was famously used in the much anticipated fight between Liu Kang and Reptile. They returned for the sequel Mortal Kombat Annihilation with tracks like Conga Fury. Later, the group, in collaboration with Don Davis, had a number of tracks featured on the soundtracks for the Matrix series of films and video games (most notably the famous freeway chase scene in The Matrix Reloaded, which featured Mona Lisa Overdrive, as well as the Animatrix, which featured the tracks Masters Of The Universe on the short Kid’s Story, and Conga Fury (Animatrix Remix) on Final Flight of the Osiris. Their single Guardian Angel was featured as the opening theme of the anime series Texhnolyze. Guardian Angel was also featured in the movie Drive starring Mark Dacascos and Kadeem Hardison. Other Juno Reactor tracks appear on movies such as Eraser, Virtuosity, Lost In Space, the Romeo + Juliet trailer, the 1999 film Beowulf and even Once Upon a Time in Mexico. Juno Reactor soundtracks have also been played during baseball, basketball, and gridiron football games, the Japanese Grand Prix, and appear on the PlayStation game Jet Moto 3 and also PlayStation 2’s Frequency, as well as the Xbox game Mad Dash Racing. Juno Reactor also scored the entirety of the Mark of Kri game.

Juno Reactor also has a song in the game Dance Dance Revolution Ultramix 4.

The Rumble Strips are an English band from Tavistock, Devon. The band take their name from Rumble Strips, which are small, continuous lines of bumps along the edge of a road. Having known each other since childhood, a precise conception date for the band doesn’t really exist. The current line-up has been together since 2004 and are now based in London. The band are currently signed to Fallout Records, a subsidiary of Universal Island Records. Their most recent single, a re-release of “Motorcycle”, reached #46 in the UK Singles Chart on June 4, 2007. Their debut album, Girls And Weather, was released on the 17th of September, when it reached #70 in the UK album charts, their latest single “Girls and Boys in Love”, came out two weeks previously, reaching #64 in the UK.

Band History

Lead singer Charlie Waller was involved in music from an early age, initial inspirations included Lou Reed’s Transformer and bands such as Adam & the Ants. He moved to London for art college and played with his band from Devon, the Action Heroes. After the Action Heroes realised they had been playing together for 9 years, they felt the need for change. With the former keyboardist – Harry Dwyer (who would later go on to direct most of the Rumble Strips’ videos) spending too much time on his Morris Minor, Waller began writing and playing again with former Tavistock friend Tom Gorbutt, and also recruited Henry Clark, (coming as standard) the drummer from the Action Heroes Matthew Wheeler, The Rumble Strips were formed, the year was 2004.

Also during this time, Charlie was one of two frontmen in Vincent Vincent and the Villains with flatmate and fellow singer/songwriter Vincent Vincent. The strain of playing in two bands eventually led to Waller quitting both groups before being coaxed back to the Rumble Strips. Vincent Vincent wrote the song “Johnny Two Bands” about Waller’s departure.

Old schoolfriend and former bandmate of all the Rumbles (from the Mother Eating Blackberries and Action Heroes) Sam Mansbridge was brought in to the lineup at the end of 2006 to beef up the live sound, playing bass and the big Rumble Drum that is such a feature of the band’s live act.

After Charlie sang lead vocals on ‘Back to Black’ for producer Mark Ronson at The Electric Proms in 2007, in late 2008 the band began working with him on their second record at London rehearsal space The Joint. Recorded off the back of their first US tour the band lay down the bulk of the tracks at Avatar Studios, New York, leaving vocals to be completed in London, England whilst orchestration was composed and over seen by Owen Pallett (Final Fantasy, Arcade Fire) and completed in Prague. The new album is cited for release in July 2009 and goes under the working name Welcome to the Walk Alone. The first single, due for release in June 2009 is “Not the Only Person”.

As part of their First Listen series of features, The-Fly.co.uk ran a track-by-track synopsis of ‘Welcome To The Walk Alone’ on their site on May 26th. Whilst stating that “Ronson’s kitchen sink production is evident after little more than a minute,” they said that the sound of the record is “lush”, highlighting ‘Dem Girls’, ‘Sweet Heart Hooligan’ and ‘Daniel’ as the album’s highlights.
